DEREK BELL
In the 1950s, a young DEREK BELL, a native of Pittsburgh heading off to serve in the US military, was perplexed.
He was baffled by the necessity of BROWN vs TOPEKA.
Weren't all Americans already, by law, equal citizens? Why would one group of citizens need special protections from the courts in a democracy?
After his military service, Bell studied law and spent the rest of his life answering those questions. ..and spawning generations of law students and legal scholars who continued finding more answers.
